Canvas allows you to record and upload media within the LMS. We recommend using Kaltura (managed through My Media in your Canvas account, and the Media Gallery within each course) if you want to create videos within Canvas, rather than the Canvas recording system.
For audio clips or more edited videos, we suggest creating these files outside of Canvas, then uploading them to either your Canvas account or your course.
The tabs "Kaltura Video Recordings" and "Audio and Video File Uploads" in the tabbed box below shows Kaltura functionality from a student view, but the use is the same for instructors. Assignments and Discussions should automatically give your students the ability to record or upload files.
Once you’re ready to add media content to your Canvas course, follow one of the options below. See the "Audio and Video File Uploads" tab in this box for step-by-step directions with images.
Embed in a Canvas Page: videos can be embedded in a course page via the plugin icon in the Rich Content Editor when editing the page. Click View All and then Embed Kaltura Media and select the video you would like to embed.
Add media to a Module: click on the + in the Module you want to add content to, and scroll down to External Tool > Select from Kaltura Media
Course Media Gallery: a Media Gallery is created for each course site, and here you can add content from your My Media Kaltura library. Your students can also share content. This is a nice way to create a playlist of sorts for your class from your Kaltura library if your class watches a lot of video content.
Kaltura / My Media does not support the storage of YouTube or Vimeo videos the way Studio does. If you have YouTube or Vimeo videos in your Studio library that you wish to keep in your Canvas courses, you will need to go back to their original source in YouTube / Vimeo and embed them in your course, following one of the options below. See the "Embedding Videos: YouTube, Vimeo" tab on the "Using Images & Videos in Canvas" page for step-by-step directions with images.
Embed in a Canvas Page:
Copy the embed code from YouTube or Vimeo, and then in the Canvas rich content editor on a page you are editing, go to Insert and choose Embed, then paste that code into the Embed Code box.
Click on the plugin icon and choose YouTube or Vimeo, then search for the video you want to embed.
Add to a Module:
click on the "+" to add content, and scroll down to External Tool, select YouTube or Vimeo and then search for content and embed. This will create a link to the video in the Module.
Instead of using External Tool, you can also just select External URL and cut and paste your YouTube or Vimeo link

Canvas provides the options to respond to discussions, assignments, and announcements using text, media uploads, or videos recorded within Canvas. I'm going to use a reading response discussion as a sample to demonstrate the process of recording a video in Canvas using Kaltura.
NOTE: Canvas does have a native recording system, but people have reported issues with it, so Kaltura is the safest method for this type of response.
To begin your response, click in the Reply field. This will bring up a response entry box. If you want to type something into this field, you can. To start a video, click the plug-in icon (shaped like a plug and circled below), and choose "Embed Kaltura Media" from the drop down menu.
Click the "+Add New" button in the pop-up window that appears.
Select "Express Capture" from the drop down menu that appears.
This will open a video window. You may need to scroll down within this pop-up. If you have multiple webcams and microphones and don't like the ones that Kaltura selects, click on the video camera and microphone icons to select the correct options. When you are ready to begin recording click the red button. Wait for the 3-2-1 countdown and then begin.
Once you have finished, click the red button on the video to stop. The screen will give you the options to record again, download a copy of the video, or use the video you have created. If you are happy enough with the recording, click the "Use This" button.
The pop-up window will allow you to rename your video, scroll down in the window if you want to see the other options. However, you can just click the "</> Save and Embed" button without any adjustments.
This will take you back to the content entry box. You can add text before or after the video by typing into this box. You may need to wait for your video to be processed. Once Canvas is finished, you will see your video in this content entry box. At this point you can click "Post Reply" (the red button at the right below the content entry box) to submit your response.
If you want to upload audio or video files (or any other type files) that you have created outside of Canvas, click on the "Insert" button once you have opened the content editor box. This example uses a reading discussion assignment for demonstration.
Using the drop down menus, navigate to Media > Upload/Record Media.
This will open a pop-up window where you can select your file. Be sure to click the "Submit" button on this window. Then be sure to click the "Post Reply" button when you have finished your response.
NOTE: If you plan to upload audio files, we recommend creating them on your computer, rather than in Canvas, then uploading your files.
We recommend uploading any videos that you create or have files for to Kaltura for storage. Kaltura is the name of the tool that appears in Canvas as My Media (in the universal Canvas menu at left) and My Media (files available to a specific course). Videos uploaded to your My Media tab are available to all courses in Canvas.
You can add a video to your course by embedding it in a Page or by adding it as an item in a module.
First, open the Canvas Page where you want to embed the video. Locate the icon that looks like an electrical plug. Click on the arrow next to it and select "Embed Kaltura Media" from the dropdown menu.
Select the video that you want to embed from the pop-up window and click the "</> Embed" button.
The video will appear on your page. Don't forget to click the "Save" button!
First, click on the "+" in the Module name. In the pop-up box, select "External Tool" from the dropdown menu.
In the menu that appears, choose "Select From Kaltura Media" and click the "Add Item" button.
A new pop-up box will show you the videos in your Media Gallery. Find the video that you want to add and click the "</> Embed" button.
The "Add Item to Class Resources" box appears again. Click the "Add Item" at the bottom of the box to confirm.
Your video will appear as an item at the bottom of the module.
Kaltura gives you the ability to create quizzes by embedding questions within a video. As a student watches the video, it will pause and provide a question that they must answer before they move on (you may have experienced this format in video trainings you have done).
You have the option to upload a video that you want to embed questions in, or to create video using the Kaltura recording tools in My Media.
>> Note: Even though you are creating a quiz, you will create an Assignment in Canvas.

You can create a quiz from your My Media folder, or by following these steps as you create a Canvas assignment. I will demonstrate the process by creating a quiz from the My Media folder, then embedding it in a Canvas Assignment.
First, create a video in My Media or upload a video to your My Media folder.
Open My Media and click the "Add New" button in the top right corner of the page, then select "Video Quiz" from the dropdown menu.
Select a video from your My Media collection. This will open a video editing window. Select a timestamp where you want to add a question, then click the blue "+ Add a Question" button on the video screen. You will be given several different types of questions to choose.
Note: if you create a True/False question be sure that the green check appears next to the correct answer.
Once you have finished adding questions. Click the blue "Done" button at the top right of the screen. If you want to edit questions or add more, click the blue "Edit Quiz" button that appears at the top of the quiz page.
The edit page gives you several different settings that cam be adjusted in terms of details, scoring, and experience (allowing the viewer to change or skip answers).
You will be able to view and edit your Kaltura quizzes anytime by navigating to your My Media folder.
First, navigate to the course where you want to use your Kaltura Quiz.
Next, create an Assignment by clicking on the Assignments tab or by creating an Assignment within a module.
Note: You are going to create a Canvas Assignment, NOT a Quiz!
Type any directions you want to include on the Assignments page in the rich content editor box. Adjust the "points," "Assignment Group," and "Display Grade as" fields according to your preferences. For Submission Type, select "External Tool" from the dropdown menu.
Click the "Find" button and select "In Video Quiz Kaltura" from the menu.
The next screen will allow you to select your pre-made quiz, or create a new Kaltura quiz (follow the steps from step 1 if you want to create a Kaltura quiz from scratch).
Set your "Submission Attempts" field, Assignment group, due date, availability date range, and click the red "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
The student view of your quiz will show an embedded video on the Assignment page, along the lines of the screenshot below.
Kaltura automatically creates a column in the gradebook, and should grade the assignment for you. You can adjust the grade either by going into SpeedGrader or the gradebook.
Kaltura / My Media provides the capability to create playlists of uploaded media – but only within a course.
To get started, open your course and click the "Media Gallery" tab in the left-hand course navigation bar. Click on the Channel Actions button at the top right of the page. Select "+ Create channel playlist."
This will take you to a window where you can build your playlist. Add media to your playlist by clicking the circled "+" button next to an item's name.
Once you have set up a playlist, the "Home" page in the Media Gallery tab will automatically display any playlists you have. If you want to see individual items, click the "[#] Media" tab at the top of the page.
You may need to add more media or edit the order of your playlist. To do this, click the Channel Actions button and select "Edit" from the drop down menu.
Click the "Playlists" tab to see your list of playlists. Click the pencil icon to edit a playlist.
This will take you back to the edit screen you have seen before. This page allows you to edit the playlists title, details, add and remove items to the playlist, and reorder items in the playlist. Click the horizontal lines next to the number to drag and drop items into a new order. Be sure to click the "Save" button at the top of the page once you're finished!
You can change the playback speed of videos in Kaltura/My Media in order to watch them at faster or slower speeds.
To change the speed of a video in SpeedGrader, click on the small video. Locate the "1.00x" at the bottom of the video screen. 1.00x refers to real-time speed.
Hover over the 1.00x and a list of speeds will appear. 2.00x refers to double-speed, and 0.50x refers to half-speed.
To change the speed of a video in a playlist or embedded video, locate the "1x" at the bottom of the video screen. 1x refers to real-time speed.
Click on the 1x and a list of speeds will appear. 2x refers to double-speed, and 0.6x refers to 60% speed.
If you're interested in seeing which course participants have watched specific videos, you can use Kaltura's Analytics feature.
