Within Mergent Intellect, there is only 1 resource which provides INDUSTRY RATIOS that cover a mixture of Public & Private companies = KEY BUSINESS RATIOS

Initial screen when logging into the Key Business Ratio component of MERGENT INTELLECT

  • KEY BUSINESS RATIOS  - offers 15 years of numerical data through 14 business ratios, covering both private & public firms in the United States, clustered by 800 lines of business.  Within each year, ratios are separately presented by the cross points for Upper quartile, Median quartile and Lower quartile.
  • There is no textual analysis of this data within the Key Business Ratio component of Mergent Intellct.  The raw data underlying these reports are compiled anonymously from over one million corporate financial statements that are voluntarily provided to Dun & Bradstreet as part of their credit rating services.  Users can quickly export KBR's data as spreadsheets or you can print the results.
  • The KBR service is divided in 2, both of which are listed in the upper right hand corner.  Your options are Searching for REPORTS or  Searching for RATIOS.
  • When you are using the RATIOS division of the KBR, you can only search by either SIC codes or NAICS codes
  • When you are using the REPORTS division of the KBR, you then have NINE major ways of searching, including Company name / City where a company is headquartered / State where a company is headquartered / Country where a company is headquartered.  These geographic options do NOT look at the legal place of incorporation, but focus on what each firm describes as their headquarter office location.  If you search for the State of DELAWARE for PUBLIC companies, your results will be about 40 firms.
  • Within each of these 2 divisions, there are 3 types of topical reports.  Within the REPORTS division you can choose from either Ratios / Variances / Norms.  When you are in the RATIOS division you can choose from either Solvency / Efficiency / Profitability.
  • Once you selected the criteria for searching the KBR database, you then have 2 options on what type of data you want displayed as your results.  You can choose either display the data aggregated by Industry, or individually broken out for each specific Company identified by the underlying data.
  • When choosing to retrieve results for each separately identified company, you have to choose between PUBLIC firms and PRIVATE firms, but please note that those 2 options display different data elements.  When viewing data from PUBLIC companies, you can be comfortable in the accuracy of the underlying ratios.  But when you are looking at results for individual PRIVATE firms, the data presented is built primarily on proprietary estimation systems, the details of which are NOT DISCLOSED TO YOU.  The producers of the KBR database do NOT make any proclamation about accuracy of the data that they present for private firms.

Within Mergent Intellect, there are many references to "SIC Codes" or "NAICS Codes" - -i f you are not familiar with those industry codes, then turn to my LibGuide on those code numbers = http://libguides.willamette.edu/sic-codes
