World Factbook (US Central Intelligenc Agency)
Centralized resource for recent statistics & standardized snapshot look at any country in the world. Also includes each country's flag, and a basic map. Major areas of focus include: Communications, Economy, Geography, Government, Military, People, and Transportation. Although this is produced by the CIA, many academic researchers consider this information to be fair and unbiased.
UN's Statistical Yearbook (United Nations)
Although there is a bit of a lag, before each year's edition comes out, this is a behemoth resource at over 800 pages in length. But it is available as a PDF, it downloads fast, and the contents are fully searchable using the "FIND" commands. It also has a conventional Table of Contents, and an Index to help find specific types of data.
International Database of Population (US Census Bureau)
Quick, easy to use system, to obtain the current or historical population of any country, as far back as 1950, or projections of population as far forward as 2050. You can also get aggregates of combined global population, as well as "Population Clocks" for the US and the World.
Penn World Tables (previously hosted by University of Pennsylvania)
Provides purchasing power parity and national income accounts converted to international prices for 188 countries for some or all of the years 1950-2014. The European Union or the OECD provide more detailed purchasing power and real product estimates for their countries and the World Bank makes current price estimates for most PWT countries at the GDP level.
International Statistical Agencies (US Census Bureau)
A simple alphabetical listing of every country in the world that has an official government agency dedicated to collecting & analyzing statistics about that country, and clickable links to each of those official agencies.
