Three Rules of Thumb for AI

AI is a great resource to explore new topics. If you use AI, keep these three rules of thumb in mind:

  • Always check with instructors if using AI is acceptable for class and to what extent.
  • Paraphrase with your own words.
  • Cite content generated by AI

Be cautious about over relying on AI. If used too much, you ultimately short change yourself. Over relying on AI will influences your writing style and voice, may inhibit writings skill, negatively influence your critical thinking skills, and impact your ability to perform research adequate. Keep in mind that AI sometimes makes up information, so always verify information with external sources.

Practical Uses for AI

AI can be incredibly useful in education, and the following are ways you could potentially use AI.

  • Generate ideas for a paper
    (Prompt: what are ten examples of biomechanical stresses on the human body?)
  • Generate a list of keywords for a topic
    (Prompt: Give a list of ten terms that relate to concussions)
  • Define unfamiliar terms
    (Prompt: What is the scientific term for shin splints. Or define stress fracture)
  • Rephrase a sentence
    (Prompt: Rephrase the following sentence to sound more scientific. Give five examples: ACL injuries can be the result of poor form and technique.)
  • Summarize dense text. 
    (Prompt: Summarize the following in bullet points...)
  • Search for a few scholarly articles.
    (Prompt: Provide articles on unshoed running that are systematic reviews from peer-reviewed journals?)
