Online Exhibition Policies

Who can create an Omeka online exhibition?

  1. A Willamette University student or faculty member can create an Omeka online exhibition with the sponsorship of a library department.

  2. Any Willamette University Library staff member can curate an Omeka online exhibition with approval from their department.

What is the relationship of physical exhibitions to Omeka online exhibitions?

  1. Omeka online exhibitions are created independent of physical exhibitions.

  2. Online-only exhibitions are encouraged.

What is required of an Omeka online exhibition curator?

  1. Curators are responsible for contacting the Omeka Expert to request access to Omeka.

  2. Curators will take full responsibility for creating the online exhibition, which includes:

    1. Gather metadata for exhibition materials.

    2. Gather and format images of exhibition materials.

    3. Confirm fair use of each image using.

    4. Prepare additional content such as narrative text and captions.

    5. Plan the narrative sequence and layout for the exhibition.

    6. Build the exhibition in Omeka using the above components.

    7. The curator is responsible for addressing any issues that may arise regarding content or copyright.

  3. Students may assist in exhibition creation at the curator's discretion. 

What support is available for creating an Omeka online exhibition?

  1. Each curator will be assigned an Expert User who can assist with basic technical support and content development advice.

  2. Expert Users are available to provide guidance but will not create the Omeka online exhibition.

  3. Technical guidelines for creating Omeka online exhibitions are available in the Handbooks and Documentation tab of this LibGuide.

  4. WU Library IT will only officially support Omeka for maintenance and migration, should a new system be adopted.

Online Exhibitions at Willamette University

Omeka is designed to be a user-friendly platform for creating online exhibitions and presenting library materials in an organized fashion. Willamette students, faculty and staff can use Omeka to create online exhibitions highlighting any library materials and related research, or as an optional companion to a physical exhibition. Omeka online exhibitions are not meant for conference websites or ad hoc digital collections.
