Canvas Guide for Students

Media and Canvas

You may be asked to record or upload video or audio responses for your courses. Canvas has built-in tools to make this process easy.

Kaltura (My Media) has two options for video creation:

  • Express Capture: allows you to record a video in response to an assignment, within Canvas
  • Kaltura Capture: is an app you can download and use to create screen recordings and videos.

You can also upload media that you create in other programs into Canvas.

Subtitles and captions:

Kaltura will auto-generate captions that can be edited for accuracy and timing for any videos you upload to your Media Gallery.

You have access to many programs that will auto-generate captions for videos or allow you to add captions to your video files. Learn more on the Subtitles and captions subpage of the Digital Learning Studio's online tutorial guide (DLS tutorial guide > Video editing page > Subtitles and captions subpage).

Creating a Video Response with Kaltura

Canvas provides the options to respond to discussions, assignments, and announcements using text, media uploads, or videos recorded within Canvas. I'm going to use a reading response discussion as a sample to demonstrate the process of recording a video in Canvas using Kaltura.

NOTE: Canvas does have a native recording system, but people have reported issues with it, so Kaltura is the safest method for this type of response.

Express Capture allows you to record a video directly in an assignment.

Sample discussion prompt

To begin your response, click in the Reply field. This will bring up a response entry box. If you want to type something into this field, you can. To start a video, click the plug-in icon (shaped like a plug and circled below), and choose "Embed Kaltura Media" from the drop down menu.

Locating the Kaltura option in the rich content editor

Click the "+Add New" button in the pop-up window that appears.

Starting a new Kaltura recording

Select "Express Capture" from the drop down menu that appears.

Selecting the Express Capture option

This will open a video window. You may need to scroll down within this pop-up. If you have multiple webcams and microphones and don't like the ones that Kaltura selects, click on the video camera and microphone icons to select the correct options. When you are ready to begin recording click the red button. Wait for the 3-2-1 countdown and then begin.

Beginning a Kaltura recording

Once you have finished, click the red button on the video to stop. The screen will give you the options to record again, download a copy of the video, or use the video you have created. If you are happy enough with the recording, click the "Use This" button.

Selecting the "Use This" recording in Kaltura

The pop-up window will allow you to rename your video, scroll down in the window if you want to see the other options. However, you can just click the "</> Save and Embed" button without any adjustments.

Saving and embedding a Kaltura recording

This will take you back to the content entry box. You can add text before or after the video by typing into this box. You may need to wait for your video to be processed. Once Canvas is finished, you will see your video in this content entry box. At this point you can click "Post Reply" (the red button at the right below the content entry box) to submit your response.

Creating Video Recordings with Kaltura Capture

Kaltura Capture is an app that you can download onto your computer. It allows you to make screen recordings, and will automatically launch when you select Kaltura Capture as your recording option.

Enter Kaltura either through the My Media folder in Canvas's universal menu, or the Media Gallery in your course. Both interfaces will have an "Add New" drop down menu near the top of the page. Select "Kaltura Capture."

Locate the Add New menu and Kaltura Capture option

If Kaltura Capture does not automatically open, install it or allow Canvas to open it for you.

Open Kaltura Capture window

You can choose to make a recording using your camera, audio, and screen recording.

You can record your full screen (if you have multiple monitors, select one from the drop down menu and you will see a preview of the screen) or select an area to record.

Options for screen recording in Kaltura Capture

If you have multiple monitors, select the one you want to record using the drop down menu. The picture preview will show you which monitor you have selected.

If you choose "Select Area" to record only part of your screen, you can move the selection box and adjust the selection size by pulling on the corners and edges of the transparent box that appears on your screen. Click the Confirm button when you are happy with your selection.

Circled areas indicate where to drag in order to adjust the size of a screen recording selection area.

Once you are ready to begin recording, click the large red button. There will be a countdown, then a floating menu that allows you to stop, pause, or cancel the recording will appear on your screen.

Once you are finished and have pressed the stop button, a pop up window will give you options on how to save, upload, or delete your recording. If you upload your recording, it will appear in your Media Gallery and can be easily embedded in your Canvas courses.

Uploading Files to Canvas

If you want to upload audio or video files (or any other type files) that you have created outside of Canvas, click on the "Insert" button once you have opened the content editor box. This example uses a reading discussion assignment for demonstration.

Locating the insert option in the rich content editor

Using the drop down menus, navigate to Media > Upload/Record Media.

Selecting to upload media through the insert menu

This will open a pop-up window where you can select your file. Be sure to click the "Submit" button on this window. Then be sure to click the "Post Reply" button when you have finished your response.

NOTE: If you plan to upload audio files, we recommend creating them on your computer, rather than in Canvas, then uploading your files.

Changing the Playback Speed

You can change the playback speed of videos in Kaltura/My Media in order to watch them at faster or slower speeds.

In a Previously submitted assignment
