Artificial Intelligence (AI Resources)

This resource is designed to assist faculty and students in the developing landscape of Artificial Intelligence.

When used properly and ethically, AI can be very helpful in many way, and while there are benefits there are also drawbacks.

Guidelines for Ethically AI Use

  • Always check with instructors if using AI is acceptable for course work, projects, etc.
  • Paraphrase with your own words.
  • Cite content generated by AI. Give credit where credit is due.

Getting Started With NotebookLM

  • NotebookLM is a research and writing assistant and note-taking tool that allows you to upload specific sources to interact with using Google’s Gemini AI models. It works with a variety of different formats such as PDFs, audio files, and videos. You can interact with the specific information you upload; it does not reach beyond the sources you provide. It is very good at extracting information from a specific source and citing were the information is found. It even has an ability to compare and contrast information found in different sources, and has an audio/podcasts feature! Use it to study materials and ask practice questions.
  • Navigate to notebooklm.google.com or find it in the Google Apps menu in your Google Account (near the bottom).
  • NotebookLM does not use your personal data, including your source uploads, queries, or responses for training.

Getting Started with Gemini

  • You can access Willamette's instance of Gemini by logging into Google with your Willamette account or navigating to gemini.google.com. If you are logged into Chrome with your Willamette account, you should not have to log into Gemini.
  • Google's statement about models and accuracy state that: "Your Willamette University chats aren't used to improve our models. Gemini can make mistakes, so double-check it.

Analysis of AI Tools

  • View a list of AI tools that provides an overview of what it does, its strengths, learn about its training data, biases, ethical issues, whether it is free or requires a subscription.

Other Tips

  • Never supply personal information about yourself or others.
  • Assume that the information you input into AI tools will forever be publicly available. It may even be used for future AI training modules.
  • Keep in mind that AI has ingrained biases that could lead to unequal treatment of people.
  • Be kind. Do not use AI generated info to harm, demean, or intimidate others.
  • Your instructors are interested in how you grow academically rather than the mediocre work of AI. Your educational journey and growth should be far more important to yourself than cutting corners or relying on AI to do the work for you.
