Additional Notes: Dwight Lear, BA '29, JD '32, provided funds for purchase of the lifelike sculpture "First Case" by J. Seward Johnson Jr. This Sculpture was placed and dedicated 8/24/96. Dwight Lear died 10/17/98 at the age of 90. A long-time Salem lawyer, entrepreneur and loyal son of Willamette University, Dwight and his late wife, Margaret, selected and provided funds for this sculpture to be placed outside the College of Law to honor his law friends and classmates. The "envelope" in the land of the sculpted attorney, about to face his "first case," has the address of the Lear's long-time home in Salem. The sculpted "piece of paper" in the briefcase has the list of names of Dwight's law school classmates. Lear was a life-long friend of Les Sparks (for whom Sparks Athletic Center is named after) and an avide fan of WU Bearcat athletics. He was a member of the Cardinal Round Table (WU athletic booster club) since its' inception in 1956; he endowed a Chair in American (Pacific Northwest) History in the College of Liberal Arts where he also endowed several scholarship funds. He was a recipient of the Les Sparks Medallion in 1995 in recognition of his loyalty and service to Willamette, and was posthumously inducted into the WU Athletic Hall of Fame for meritorious service in 1989.
