Explore the world of popular music from the second half of the 20th century to the present through "covers," whether in tribute acts, cover acts, or revivalist bands. Close listening is the focus of the class, together with themes selected from: covers and intellectual property; covers and power structures in the music industry; covers and notions of authorship; covers and theories of creativity and originality. Combination of lecture and student presentations. Formal musical training not required. This class is a joint class for students from Tokyo International University and Willamette University.
