ENVS 299: Topics in Environmental Science

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has created an interactive U.S. Landslide Inventory and Susceptibility map. It is a compilation of past landslide activity paired with topology to predict where landslides might occur in the future. The primary objective of the National Landslide Hazards Program is to reduce long-term losses from landslide hazards by improving our understanding of the causes of ground failure and suggesting mitigation strategies.

Below is a map of Salem and greater surrounding area that are susceptible to landslides. White and yellow indicate little to zero susceptibility and red indicates highly susceptible to landslides. The areas in grey indicate the level of confidence that a landslide will occur, dark grey indicating the highest degree of confidence by the USGS that a landslide will occur.
