Once again, the Mark O. Hatfield Library, the Law Library, and the Family Law and Child Advocacy Association are collaborating with the Salem-Keizer School District to identify local public schools, from a list of nominated schools, to be recipients of the books collected that year.
The annual Children's Winter Book Drive takes place at the end of the fall semester. We invite the Willamette community to donate children's books (new and used books in good condition) to help promote literacy in the Salem area.
While you're out shopping, why not pick out a book for this worthwhile cause? Or if you have any gently used children's books at home, consider donating them to this cause.

2024 RECIPIENTS
The Teen Parent Program at Roberts High School is an alternative education program designed to offer a specialized curriculum and other services to meet the needs of young parents, including mothers who are pregnant and teens that are parenting. The program serves approximately 50 students and students have specialized onsite services available to them. Babies through age four come to school with the moms/dads for an onsite daycare and preschool.
Chapman Hill is a kindergarten through fifth-grade school located in West Salem, Oregon. The school has an enrollment that averages around 400 students, and their nickname is the Cheetahs. The school was built in 1985 and named in honor of James Rolla Chapman who came to Oregon in 1891 to develop one of the largest fruit and nut farms in the Northwest.
Brush College is a kindergarten through fifth-grade school located in West Salem, Oregon with an enrollment around 300 students. They are known as the Bulldogs. The original Brush College Elementary was built in 1860. It was named "brush" because of nearby ground cover, and "college" because at the turn of the last century the school offered the highest level of learning for the nearby area.

Board books are easy for very young children to grasp and turn pages to look at images as well as durable. In both Spanish and English. (Ages 0-3)
Picture books are usually read by adults and older siblings to young children. They have more content and are visually stimulating -- the images help tell the stories. In Spanish and English. (Ages 0-8)
Early reader books are the first steps in independent reading. In Spanish and English. (Ages 5-6)
Chapter books are more challenging and complex. In Spanish and English. (Ages 7-10)
