IDS 101: Chemicals and Society

When used properly and ethically, AI can be very helpful in writing anything from a short poem to a full fledged thesis. While there are benefits, there are also drawbacks.

Guidelines for Ethically AI Use

  • If you use AI-created content, cite it. Give credit where credit is due and protect yourself from plagiarism.
  • Always check with instructors as to what are acceptable uses of AI for class.
  • Write your own papers and do your own work.

The bottom line is that your instructors are far more interested in how you grow academically than what is written by AI bot. And your educational journey is far more important to yourself.

REFINE YOUR THESIS TITLE - Brainstorm ideas for more attention-grabbing titles.

Bing Chat is great at generating snappy titles. After brainstorming titles by yourself, try using a similar prompt:

Prompt: Generate attention-grabbing titles related to the given type, topic and targeted towards the specified audience. The titles should be compelling and catchy, designed to capture the reader's attention and generate interest. The thesis topic is on the history of land use in Salem, Oregon, with a focus on early settlers, pioneers, and Native Americans. The audience is for academic professors. The tone is professional. The number of titles I require is 5.

Response: Based on your query... here are some potential titles. These titles aim to capture the essence of your thesis topic, while also reflecting a professional and academic tone suitable for an audience of professors. I hope these suggestions help you in your research and writing process.

1. "The Changing Landscape of Salem, Oregon: A Historical Analysis of Early Settlers, Pioneers, and Native Americans"
2. "Land Use and Settlement in Salem, Oregon: A Comparative Study of Early Settlers and Native American Perspectives"
3. "Unpacking the History of Land Use in Salem, Oregon: An Examination of Early Settlement and Native American Land Rights"
4. "The Legacy of Land Use in Salem, Oregon: A Study of Early Settlers, Pioneers, and Native American Land Management Practices"
5. "Salem, Oregon's Land Use History: An Analysis of Early Settlements, Pioneer Expansion, and Native American Perspectives"

CREATE AN ABSTRACT - Before using it, identify your main points before the AI summarizes it for you.

ItsChatGPT.com walks through how to generate an abstract. It can provide a general structure for you to develop further. Try to write an abstract by yourself first, then run a prompt. It may provide ideas for how to improve what you've already written. Remember that no AI will know as much about your content than you.

Prompt: I need to generate an abstract. The following are the main points of my content: land use in Salem, Oregon, has changed drastically in the last 50 years. The City of Salem enacted new policies in the 1990s that restricted the urban growth boundaries. New zoning forces new buildings in high density areas to require spaces for businesses on the bottom floors while requiring residential living spaces on floors above. Can you provide three examples of abstracts?

Response: Certainly! Here are three possible abstracts based on the information you provided:

1. Title: “The Evolution of Land Use in Salem, Oregon: A Historical Perspective” In the last 50 years, land use in Salem, Oregon has undergone significant changes. The City of Salem implemented new policies in the 1990s that restricted urban growth boundaries and forced new buildings in high-density areas to have commercial spaces on the bottom floors and residential living spaces on the floors above. This paper examines the historical evolution of land use in Salem, Oregon, and analyzes the impact of these policies on the city’s development.

2. Title: “The Impact of Zoning Policies on Urban Development in Salem, Oregon” In the 1990s, the City of Salem enacted new zoning policies that required new buildings in high-density areas to have commercial spaces on the bottom floors and residential living spaces on the floors above. This paper examines the impact of these policies on urban development in Salem, Oregon. Using a case study approach, we analyze three different neighborhoods in Salem and assess how zoning policies have influenced their development over time.

3. Title: “The Economic Implications of Zoning Policies in Salem, Oregon” In the 1990s, the City of Salem implemented new zoning policies that required new buildings in high-density areas to have commercial spaces on the bottom floors and residential living spaces on the floors above. This paper examines the economic implications of these policies for businesses and residents in Salem, Oregon. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative data, we analyze how zoning policies have affected property values, business growth, and quality of life for residents.

REPHRASE SENTENCES - Communicate more clearly by rephrasing or paraphrasing.

Sometimes we struggle with how to phrase something. If we are honest, we sometimes turn to friends, instructors, writing centers, or parents for ideas when we're stuck. AI can help provide ideas that may help you overcome these barriers.

Prompt: I'm having trouble paraphrasing the land use laws dealing with water use in Klamath Falls and Aative Americans. Can you give me ideas for how to reword the following: "Native American tribal water rights are guaranteed by the federal government to the extent that endangered species, like salmon in the Klamath River, aren’t placed in danger, according to a court decision."

Response: I can help you with that. Here are some possible rewordings of the given sentence:

  • The federal government has guaranteed Native American tribal water rights, but only to the extent that endangered species, such as salmon in the Klamath River, are not threatened 1.
  • According to a court decision, Native American tribal water rights are protected by the federal government as long as they do not endanger endangered species, such as salmon in the Klamath River 1.
  • The federal government has ensured that Native American tribal water rights are protected, but only if they do not pose a threat to endangered species, such as salmon in the Klamath River 1.

HELP WITH RESEARCH WORKFLOW - Help automate your research workflow.

Elicit: The AI Research Assistant - (NOTE: This is no longer freely available to use)
Elicit can find relevant open access papers without perfect keyword match, summarize takeaways from the paper specific to your question, and extract key information from the papers. More advanced features of this resources cost money per use. In the prompt and response below, it locates and summarized a general topic from multiple open access sources--it does not include articles behind paywalls.

Prompt: Land use policy of Salem, Oregon

Response: Oregon's statewide land use planning program, established in 1973, aimed to curb sprawl and protect natural resources. The program requires cities and counties to adopt comprehensive plans that comply with 19 statewide land use goals set by the Land Conservation and Development Commission (LCDC) (Knaap, 1988; Walker, 2011). Local governments must get their plans approved by the state Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD). Research on the program's effectiveness has produced mixed results. Some studies found the program successfully contained growth within urban boundaries and preserved rural land. Gustafson (1982) concluded the program showed "promise of substantially improving rural land use management". Knaap (1988) found the program led local governments to adopt more restrictive land use policies. Jaeger (2012) found property values increased at similar rates regardless of land use regulations, suggesting the program did not harm landowners. However, other research found the program's impacts were limited or uncertain. Pease (1991) found that while an Oregon county adopted objective criteria for defining "commercial agriculture" to comply with the program, the criteria's effectiveness was unclear. Kline (1999) found the program concentrated development within urban growth boundaries but was uncertain if it reduced development of resource lands. Armstrong (1996) found that while the program influenced local land use decisions, local governments still had significant autonomy. Public support for the program has fluctuated. Walker (2011) found Oregonians initially supported the program but became disenchanted in the 2000s, voting for initiatives that undermined it. Bassett (2009) found that arguments over the program shifted from locus of control to impacts, and "fairness" became an argument only in 2000. In summary, while Oregon's program aimed to curb sprawl and protect resources, research on its effectiveness and public support has been mixed. The program has influenced local land use policies but also given local governments flexibility. Its success at achieving its goals while balancing state and local control remains uncertain.

GENERATE CITATION PATTERS - AI is horrible at providing correct citations.

Instead, use Willamette's citation pages, the print manual (available in our reference collection), Google Scholar's citation function, or Zotero.
