ARTS 116: Introduction to Drawing: Search Tips

SEARCH TIP

When searching the Archives collection use a variety of words, such as: aerial, birds-eye, and panoramic.

SEARCH TIP

Archives staff (and a host of amazing Archives interns!) have attempted to cross list all building names in our Campus Photograph Collection. So when you search for "College of Medicine," "Science Hall," "Music Hall," or "Art Building" it will return images of the building that currently serves as the Art Building at the corner of State and Winter Streets. Similarly, a search for the "College of Law" will return images of the Truman Wesley Collins Legal Center as well as the building currently known as Gatke Hall, which formerly housed the College of Law and was Salem's original Post Office.

QUESTIONS TO ASK

When Evaluating Visuals Ask:

  • Who created the image? Who is in the image? (is it faculty? students? staff?)
  • What is included? What is left out? (And, is it intentional or unintentional?)
  • Where was the image taken?
  • When (decade, year, time of day) was the image taken? Visual clues are everywhere!
  • Why was the image created/taken? Can you determine the original purpose?
  • How was the image created? is it a drawing? photo? negative?

SEARCH TIP

Ask Yourself:

  • Has the building's name changed?
  • Can the dates in my search be refined?

SEARCH TIP

Be aware that the names of buildings sometimes change over time. Examples include:

University Hall ⇒ Waller Hall

Salem Post Office ⇒ College of Law ⇒ Gatke Hall

College of Medicine ⇒ Science Hall ⇒ Music Hall ⇒ Art Building
