Starting an entry

In order to make setting up WUpedia entries easier, we have created a template (called a pattern) on the WUpedia WordPress site. Here's how to use it to get started.

Navigate to the "Posts" tab, and click "Add New Post" at the top of the page.

Navigating to the Posts page in Bluehost

Click the blue "+" button at the top of the new page. This will reveal a menu for blocks (the individual chunks that make up an entry), patterns (templates for different parts of an entry), and media (a library of uploaded media). Click on the "Patterns" tab, and select "My patterns." Click on "WUpedia post pattern."

Selecting the WUpedia post pattern

You can click either of the "x"s to hide the menu.

Click somewhere on the new page, and click the three dots in the floating menu that appears. Click "Detach." You are now able to modify this post however you want. Do some basic things like add a title and replace "Student Contributor" with your name.

Locate detach option on a post pattern.

If you want to get rid of the sample text and quote blocks, click the icon with three horizontal lines at the top of the screen. This shows you the different blocks that make up the page. You can delete, replace text, highlight to copy and paste over the blocks, and so on.

Adding footnotes to an entry

Links to other entries in WUpedia

If your entry relates to other entries in WUpedia, please create links to those entries. To set off your text as a link, please bold it. Highlight the text and click the link icon. Begin typing the name of an entry you would like to link to and it should appear. Click the link in the dropdown menu to create the link.

Adding a featured image to a post

The featured image is the large image that will appear at the top of your post behind the title, and next to the post's title in a list. You will need to download this image from the Archives website onto your computer and upload it to the media folder in WUpedia.

To download an image from the Archives, log in, locate your archival image, click the 3 dots at the top of the image framework, and select download from the drop down menu. Save the file to your computer; give it a name you will be able to find!

Next, log into WUpedia and navigate to the Media folder in the left-side menu. Click the "Add New Media File" button at the top of the page.

Once your image is uploaded, add alt text, a caption, and description. The caption and description can be the title of the file in the Archives. Alt text should be a brief description of the image. (Learn more about alt text and get tips on Harvard University's website – "Write helpful Alt Text to describe images").

Now navigate to your post. Click the icon made up of rectangles next to the "publish" button. This allows you to edit aspects of your entry. Click the "Post" button. Click on the "Set featured image" button.
